Array DBMS: Problems, Technologies, and Perspectives

Ramon Antonio Rodriges Zalipynis
HSE University

An N-d array is a natural model for numerous important data types in geo-, bioinformatics, ecology, medicine, climate, and astronomy, to name a few. The rapid growth of array data volumes stimulates the development of innovative systems for managing big arrays: Array DBMSs. For example, ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) has alone accumulated over 360 PB of weather-related data while Maxar (a space technology and intelligence company) collects about 80 TB of satellite imagery per day. The talk will survey modern problems tackled by Array DBMSs, their underlying technologies, and promising R&D opportunities that are actively discussed at VLDB and SIGMOD.
